Mouthwash with microcrystalline chitosan
Mouthwash – how to choose the right one?
A good mouthwash should complement cleaning after brushing your teeth, support daily gum hygiene, and help maintain fresh breath. Most popular mouthwashes achieve these goals at the expense of side effects: alcohol dries out the mucosa and irritates sensitive gums, while long-term use of chlorhexidine discolors teeth and alters taste perception.
Mouthwash with microcrystalline chitosan is an alcohol-free and chlorhexidine-free format. Chitosan exhibits adhesion to enamel hydroxyapatite – the mineral that builds teeth – and forms a thin protective film on the tooth surface and mucosa after rinsing.

Currently in the RegCare offer: mouthwash with chitosan, alcohol-free, available in three flavors. Detailed composition and dosage can be found on the product page.
Who is the chitosan mouthwash for?
-
Gums prone to irritation: The alcohol-free formula does not irritate the mucosa or sensitive gums – a common problem with popular drugstore rinses that have a high ethanol content. The mouthwash supports daily oral care without a burning sensation after rinsing.
-
Orthodontic braces and implants: With fixed braces, standard brushing does not reach all the spaces around brackets and wires. Rinsing complements the cleaning of these hard-to-reach areas and supports oral hygiene throughout the entire orthodontic treatment.
-
An alternative to chlorhexidine rinses: Chlorhexidine used short-term after procedures is effective, but with daily use, it discolors teeth and disrupts taste. RegCare mouthwash is suitable for long-term, daily use without these side effects.
-
People looking for an alcohol-free mouthwash: The alcohol-free formula is well tolerated in cases of dry mouth, when taking medications that affect saliva volume, or simply by individuals who prefer a milder format.
Note: Mouthwash supports daily oral hygiene but does not replace regular visits to the dentist. For gum or tooth ailments, consult a dentist.
How to choose a mouthwash?
When choosing a mouthwash, it is worth understanding how the chitosan format differs from popular alternatives:
-
Alcohol-free vs. containing alcohol: Alcohol in mouthwashes acts as a preservative and temporarily reduces the number of bacteria in the mouth, but it dries out the mucosa. Saliva plays a crucial protective role – its deficiency promotes further oral hygiene problems. The alcohol-free format supports proper hydration of the mucosa.
-
Chitosan instead of chlorhexidine: Chlorhexidine used after dental procedures is effective, but with daily use, it accumulates stains and changes taste perception. Chitosan supports oral hygiene without these side effects – it is suitable for long-term, daily use.
-
Protective film on enamel: Chitosan exhibits adhesion to enamel hydroxyapatite and forms a thin film on the tooth surface after each rinse. This layer aids daily care and helps maintain fresh breath longer after rinsing.
The mouthwash is available in several flavor variants (mint, strawberry, wild strawberry), making daily use easier – especially for individuals sensitive to intense mint flavors.
Microcrystalline chitosan in mouthwash – what you need to know
Microcrystalline chitosan has a cationic (positive) charge, which allows it to attach to enamel hydroxyapatite – the mineral that builds teeth. After each rinse, it forms a thin protective film on the tooth surface and mucosa, which supports daily plaque hygiene and helps maintain fresh breath.
The formula of the RegCare rinse takes into account the pH of the oral cavity environment (neutral or slightly alkaline) for optimal chitosan performance.

RegCare products are manufactured in our own laboratory in Jelnik, under ISO 7 cleanliness conditions. We produce the microcrystalline chitosan ourselves – it is the core of the CHITOMED P.S.A. technology.
How to use mouthwash with chitosan?
-
Use after brushing your teeth with toothpaste – mouthwash is the last stage of oral hygiene, not the first.
-
Rinse for 30–60 seconds and spit out.
-
Do not rinse your mouth with water after use – the chitosan film works best when it remains on the teeth for a while after rinsing.
The rinse is intended for adults; for use in children, consult a dentist. Detailed information on dosage and available flavors can be found on the product page.
FAQ – frequently asked questions about mouthwashes
Does RegCare mouthwash contain alcohol or fluoride?
The mouthwash does not contain alcohol – this is one of the reasons it works well for sensitive gums and dry mouth. The alcohol-free formula is safe for daily, long-term use. Information regarding fluoride content can be found on the product packaging.
Is the mouthwash suitable for use with orthodontic braces?
Yes. The alcohol-free and chlorhexidine-free rinse works well for long-term use during orthodontic treatment. Rinsing after every tooth brushing aids hygiene around brackets, wires, and in spaces that are hard to reach with a toothbrush.
How does chitosan mouthwash differ from rinses with chlorhexidine?
Chlorhexidine is effective short-term, but with long-term daily use, it discolors teeth and alters taste perception – which is why dentists usually recommend it after procedures, not for everyday use. Mouthwash with chitosan is suitable for daily use without these effects: it does not cause discoloration and does not change taste. It supports oral hygiene by forming a protective chitosan film on the tooth surface after each rinse.
