Facial creams with microcrystalline chitosan
Facial creams with chitosan – how to choose the right one?
Facial creams differ not only in texture – what matters most is the active ingredients they contain and what they actually leave on the skin after application. Most creams provide hydration, but do not protect the skin barrier from repeated damage caused by heating, air conditioning, wind, or daily cleansing. The result is familiar: skin quickly returning to a feeling of tightness, increased sensitivity when changing products, and fine lines appearing earlier than expected.
RegCare facial creams with microcrystalline chitosan take a different approach: chitosan forms a bioadhesive film on the surface of the epidermis, reducing transepidermal water loss (TEWL). Hydration does not evaporate throughout the day because it is retained by this protective layer. This is the core mechanism of every cream in the line – whether you choose a moisturizing or peptide-based anti-aging formula. Detailed information about chitosan properties can be found on the microcrystalline chitosan properties page.
Who are chitosan facial creams for?
Microcrystalline chitosan is biocompatible and well tolerated by different skin types:
Dry and dehydrated skin
Chitosan acts as a humectant, binding water, while the bioadhesive film prevents its evaporation. This dual mechanism retains hydration more effectively than creams based solely on hyaluronic acid.
Sensitive and irritation-prone skin
Chitosan-based formulas (e.g. 5% chitosan) strengthen the skin barrier without fragrances or colorants. Suitable even for atopic skin and children over 3 years old.
Combination skin
Chitosan helps balance sebum in the T-zone without drying out drier areas. Applied in a thin layer, it works better than heavy oil-based creams.
Mature skin (35+)
For wrinkles and loss of firmness, chitosan alone is not enough. RegCare adds peptides (Argireline®, SYN-AKE®), growth factors (EGF, FGF2), and advanced peptide complexes (SYN-GLOW, SYN-UP) that support skin density and regeneration.
Hyperpigmentation-prone skin
Hydroxyapatite combined with chitosan helps improve skin tone uniformity and strengthens the barrier, especially after sun exposure or aesthetic treatments.
RegCare creams are not intended to treat skin diseases. In case of dermatological conditions, consult a dermatologist.
How to choose a facial cream with chitosan?
Choosing the right cream comes down to three questions:
1. What is the main skincare goal?
Hydration and barrier support are universal. Anti-aging care targets wrinkles and firmness loss. Intensive regeneration is needed after procedures or in advanced skin aging.
2. Which active ingredients should complement chitosan?
Chitosan alone forms a protective film and retains moisture. Combined with:
- hyaluronic acid → deeper hydration
- hydroxyapatite → barrier strengthening and tone improvement
- peptides → wrinkle reduction and firmness support
- growth factors (EGF, FGF2) → regeneration and fibroblast activation
3. What is the skin condition and age?
Younger skin benefits mainly from barrier support.
30–45: peptide-based care for expression lines.
45+: growth factors and regenerative formulas.
Many users combine two creams: a lightweight hydrating cream in the morning and a more intensive one in the evening.
Microcrystalline chitosan in facial creams – what you should know
Microcrystalline chitosan is the only natural polymer with a positive charge, allowing it to bind to the negatively charged surface of the skin. It forms a breathable bioadhesive film that reduces TEWL and strengthens the epidermal barrier.
In facial creams, chitosan works on the surface of the skin, while ingredients like hyaluronic acid act deeper by binding water. Together they create a two-level hydration system.
RegCare products are developed in an ISO 7 cleanroom laboratory in Jelnik. The microcrystalline chitosan is produced in-house – it is the core of CHITOMED P.S.A. technology.
How to use facial cream with chitosan?
Apply to clean, slightly damp skin (after toner or mist). Moisture helps distribute chitosan evenly and improves its ability to retain hydration.
Use:
- morning → lightweight hydration cream
- evening → peptide or regenerative cream
Chitosan creams do not contain SPF – use sunscreen in the morning routine.
FAQ – facial creams with chitosan
How long before results are visible?
Hydration effects appear within a few days. Skin barrier improvement takes 3–4 weeks. Anti-aging effects from peptides appear after 4–8 weeks of regular use.
When should I choose a hydrating vs peptide cream?
Hydrating cream → dry, sensitive skin.
Peptide cream → 30+ skin with expression lines.
Both can be used together (day/night routine).
Can chitosan creams be combined with acids or retinol?
Yes. Chitosan supports barrier recovery and works well alongside acids. With retinol, alternate usage (retinol at night, chitosan cream in the morning).
Are they suitable under makeup?
Yes, lightweight formulas absorb quickly and work well as a makeup base.
What is the difference between a daily cream and a booster?
Daily cream = everyday barrier and hydration support.
Booster = concentrated active treatment used occasionally for intensive regeneration.
